Why Being Outdone Marks Success

*A couple weeks ago I said that today’s church lacks the discipleship of the Biblical church and promised to give a definition of discipleship. Here it is…

I am really passionate about discipleship.

Jesus pronounced His Kingdom on the Earth through discipleship, and we simply cannot come up with better methods than Jesus. So I stick with discipleship.

Discipleship Defined

The word “discipleship,” gets thrown around a lot today, but how many of us know what it means? Some see it as Bible study, others as a relationship, and others just think it is a strange word.

The dictionary defines disciple as “a follower or student of a teacher, leader, or philosophy.” That definition is decent, but we can do better.

When Jesus trained the disciples, his goal was to multiply himself. I don’t mean he wanted to create 12 clones, but rather 12 men who were capable of carrying on and extending his work. Yes they followed him, but once he left Earth they were meant to continue his work in new places and for new generations.

This is discipleship: training and teaching others to fulfill and extend a mission in ways that could not be done by yourself alone (for the record, Jesus could have done more by himself, but he chose to limit himself in part to set an example for us).

Video: God’s Glory Revealed Through Nature

I Love Nature.

Being in the outdoors helps me connect with God more than anything. It reminds me of how small I am and how big God is.

Creation is huge, but God is so much bigger. He made it beautiful, he made it with detail, he made it well.

I’ve always wanted to make a video with Scripture praising God for His Creation interwoven with footage of His Creation. I’ve never done it, until now…

The best part is, even though God is so big, He still loves us on a personal level. Awesome.

How do you connect best with God?

An Awesome Video on Leadership

I saw this video a couple years ago and loved it. Recently I re-watched it and found it better than I remembered.

As a leader, you know the importance of motivating people. It doesn’t matter if you lead a sports team, business operation, or discipleship ministry. If your people have no motivation, then you cannot accomplish anything.

This video does an amazing job answering the question, “what motivates us?”

A small sampling of what I learned from this video:
- Financial incentives actually lead to poorer performance in cognitive and creative tasks.
- Allowing people to be self-directed leads to progress. Closely managing them, at best, keeps things the same.
- People really want to be a part of something that has purpose.

Check it out for yourself, I promise it’s worth it:

Here are a few questions to help you process and apply the info:

1) Am I training people to be autonomous or dependent on a manager?

2) Am I giving people freedom to use their gifts to the best of their abilities?

3) Do I encourage creativity and motivation?

4) How am I trying to motivate people? And is it working?

5) What is my purpose/vision for my company/ministry/sports team?

6) Do my people know and buy into our purpose/vision?

In the comments, I would love to hear about the vision you have as a leader for whatever it is that you lead.

The Heart of GSM

I just finished a video for the Grace Student Ministries website. The goal of the video is to show people who we are, what we do well, and hopefully to get them interested in some of our materials.

For all of our flaws, we have had some success with youth ministry and want to help others find success in reaching the next generation. We want to enable students to become leaders, but we are not satisfied with it ending there. We want student leaders who can teach others how to become leaders as well.

Here’s the video, let me know what you think!

If you enjoyed the worship footage, get ready because we filmed a couple full length songs last night with 9 different cameras with the purpose of putting them all online!

It’s Finally Here!

A few things are finally here.

1) Breathing room! I have been working around the clock to complete some seminary work and prepare for 30 Below, our high school retreat. They are now both done, which gives me some space to live!

2) I watched the Oscars last night. Much more enjoyable with DVR and the fast forward button. I thought the stage looked amazing, the hosts were mediocre, and I am glad Inception won 4 oscars, though it deserved more.

3) I have a feeling one of the videos we made for 30 Below will be nominated at next year’s Oscars. It is one of my best, so please enjoy it and share it with your friends. To preface, it stars “Lil’ Neon,” the true genius behind Justin Bieber’s success. Neon wrote all of Justin’s classics, but the Biebs stole all his work and tweaked the lyrics a little bit. Lil’ Neon refused to take it anymore and so he made his own epic music video.

Love Story

A while back, I wrote out a story about the Way I fell in love with Morgan. You can read it right here: CLICK!

Or, you can watch this video of me telling it for our Pursuing Passion Weekend! I also give some insight into what love actually means…

Student Creativity Unleashed

One of my passions in life is teaching students to use their creative gifts to glorify God. One of the ways I am doing that is giving them full reign with the High School Announcement Videos (the TrueNorth 5b4 as some call it). At times it feels like a risk because I am handing students an expensive camera and saying, “have fun!” as they create a video that will be seen by over 300 people.

But then, they use their gifts and always impress! It is a blessing to see them grow and learn. Here are two recent videos, filmed and edited by High School students that everyone can get a kick out of.

It’s amazing what people can do when you empower them, so don’t be afraid to do it!

TrueNorth Vision Video

Today we premiered the biggest project I have made in my life. It is called the TrueNorth Vision Video, and it was a beast. I started filming in March and have been working on it on and off since then. It was a really fun project and I was honored to tell the stories of some of our students. I know its longer than normal, but I think it turned out really good so I hope you enjoy it. We got the idea from Hillsong Church’s vision video, so if you have ever seen that you may see some of the tributes (or blatant rip-offs) of their creative ideas.

If you have ever wondered what video editing looks like, I decided to include this picture so you can see how many edits and layers there are. The top section is video and the bottom is audio. There are actually a few more layers, both higher and lower, but they couldn’t fit. Anyway, I thought some people may be interested in seeing what video editing looks like:

This version is not as exciting. Especially since I deleted all the media before taking the snapshot.
