I am not 17!

Apparently I have not aged since middle school.

In 8th grade, I was the same height I am now (6’1″). People would ask me all the time if I was a junior or senior in high school. I used to be pretty proud of that. But now, at the age of 23, I still get asked the same question all the time!

How many 17 year olds do you know who have:
1) Graduated from College

2) Gotten Married

For reference, I have also included the following pics
3) Middle schoolish

4) Senior year of high school (when I actually was 17 or 18)

5) College

Clearly, I am no longer 17. But I guess I just have a young face. I have tried growing a beard, but all I can seem to do is get a hairy neck (or, neard, as some call it). What really bothers me is shopping for shorts. I happen to have a small waistline. When I look for shorts in my size, all I can find are cargo shorts because people automatically assume that if my waist is that small I should be 15 and only wear cargo shorts. I have nothing against cargo shorts, but there are days when I would like to wear knee length pants without 12 pockets on them.

So if you see me, don’t tell me I look 17. (Actually, I don’t really care. I know I look strikingly similar in my wedding picture and my senior year picture. But hey, you have to blog about something). The real question is, will I ever age? And if so, when? Will I be a middle aged man with 3 kids when people stop guessing my age is 17? Or will I be a grandfather who is forced to wear nothing but cargo shorts? Only time will tell.

Random day in the office

Hello. Here is a video of us working in the office. Random. Pointless. But maybe interesting…

True North Viral Campaign

Are you participating in the True North Viral Campaign? Good news! You are almost done! Just watch the following video and follow the instructions!

In case you missed it, your challenge on this website is to name one of the two bands that I give as an example for Christians who are making an impact in pop culture. The next webpage to visit is True North Times. IMPORTANT: I am giving you your challenge for that webpage as well. You need to find the “Snuggies” video and figure out how much the snuggie will cost you. Once you have the answers from all the different blogs, e-mail them to me at evan@gfc.tv!

Top 5 reasons I love Lord of the Rings

I admit it. I am a nerd. But I am sitting here listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and can’t help but write why I love these movies so much. And so, here is my list…

5) The Music is incredible. Howard Shore won two different oscars for the score of these movies. If you ever want some good music to study with, download the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. It will change your life. It also makes the movie so much better. Purchase it here, or do yourself a favor and start a Lord of the Rings pandora.

4) The Cinematography! This movie was shot in one of the most beautiful places in the world: New Zealand. I thought the scenery in the movies was so incredible that I even made a trip to New Zealand myself. Here is a picture of Mt. Sunday, the spot where Rohan was built. I took this photo on one of the greatest days of my life.

3) The attention to detail: Every scene has such incredible design. The Shire, where the first scene with the hobbits takes place, had plants being cultivated for months before the scenes were shot, fireplaces had burn marks above them, and people spent over 4 hours a day getting make up on. Crazy.

2) Sam’s speech in this scene blows my mind on so many levels: Watch on Youtube.

1) How well everything comes together: I think movies are the most difficult form of art around. Why? Because it involves everything. For these movies to be made, they needed incredible writers (and they were only rewriting a story written by an incredible writer). They also needed people who could paint and draw for storyboards. They needed people who could carve statues and build detailed models of entire cities. They needed actors who could carry roles for over 9 hours. They needed skill in directing, filming, and editing. Everything comes together so well and the finished product is fantastic. The Lord of the Rings is a celebration of creativity, and it gives people some great messages that have made a huge impact on this world.

Creativity in Culture

For thousands of years, the arts have had an enormous impact on culture. Today the story is the same: celebrities voice their politics daily, movie themes change the way people think, and song lyrics get stuck in our heads every day. For years, christians thrived in the arts (Sistine Chapel anyone?), but over the last couple hundred years we have taken a step back. The arts have become dangerous places where immorality rules and most Christians will not get involved in secular creativity.

Britney Spears just released a song titled “3″. It is extremely popular (top 5 on iTunes) and people all over the radio are talking about how much they love the song and Britney Spears. The only problem is, the message of the song is terrible. She sings about how great it is to have a threesome. One of the lines in the song says, “Living in sin is the new thing.” Another says, “Three is a charm, two is not the same, I don’t see the harm, so are you game.”

The problem is, there is a lot of harm. Sex is an amazing gift from God, but when we twist his gift and go away from his plan for it, we get hurt. This kind of blatant lie saturates our creative culture. TV shows, movies, music, and even video games teach things that are not the truth. We can say that it does not affect us, but ultimately, if you hear the same message 50 times a day, some of it is going to rub off on you.

Christians need to take back creative culture. The impact the arts have on society cannot be denied and is monumental. Imagine what would happen if movies were made, with excellence, and were full of truth. I am not saying we need to have more Christian music or more Christian movies, we have that. We need Christians in secular culture who are giving messages of truth for everyone to hear.

Hear are some great examples: Switchfoot and Owl City are both secular bands led by Christians. Their songs reach millions of people who do not know the Gospel and they hear truth. One of my favorite examples is the Lord of the Rings book. The author, J.R.R. Tolkien, was a Christian (he actually led C.S. Lewis to Christ). His book is not a christian book, but it is full of themes that reflected Tolkien’s beliefs. People love those stories, and the themes and truth in them are going to make an impact on people’s lives.

So let’s stop being afraid of the arts. Let’s infiltrate them and start spreading the truth of God’s Kingdom. If you know of any Christians who are already doing what I am talking about, post them in the comments section and let’s talk about it.

Also…AJ Passman just wrote a great blog about a recent movie that gives a message contrary to truth. He gives some great thoughts about it too, so check it by clicking here.

Calendars

So I am pumped for this calendar idea we have. We are going to use pictures from True North Students and put them into a calendar. There are some really cool pictures out in the world, and I want people to see them. If you are a student and want to submit a photo for review, send it to me at evan@gfc.tv and include your name, school, and photo title. Also, if anyone has some good ideas for who could print this calendar for cheap, let me know!

Here are some cool pictures that may inspire you…

The City

The City has finally launched at Grace. It is an online connection center for community already being lived out in the real world. A couple weeks ago, I made this video to get people excited and curious about the city. If you are a part of Grace and haven’t joined the city yet, than you need to right now.

True North Announcement videos

The main service at Grace usually gives their announcements in a video skit called the “5b4.” We at True North decided it was time we started our own version. The first one aired on October 11, 2009 (no doubt a day that shall be remembered in history). Here it is now, just for you…

The Start of Something

Yes, I have a blog. If you choose to read or follow this blog, you will get to see some of what is going on in my life, what God is teaching me, some videos and photos, and more. I hope you like it!
